MANCHESTER – On Tuesday, West High School’s NJROTC held its Annual Inspection Ceremony, which included inspection of the unit, as well as recognitions and promotions for cadets in the program.
Commander Eric D. Humphreys, U.S. Navy (retired), served as the inspecting officer, with the ceremony broken into two parts: a formal inspection and recognition of cadets. Unit Commanding Officer Tonykus Hebert led the unit through inspections before addressing the audience.
“I am honored to stand here today as the Commanding Officer of the Manchester West Navy Junior ROTC,” Hebert said. “I have been in this program for my whole time in High School. Within my time here, I have gotten to experience so many new things, and have had so much fun.”

The NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp) program operates at West High, but students from any area of the city can attend West to take part in the program. The unit consists of several teams, including marksmanship, academic, armed drill, physical fitness, drill and color guard. Cadets are active in the community, providing color guards and performing drill routines, while also volunteering their time at events such as parades, road races and cleanups.
“(Master Gunnery Sgt. Ronald Slagle) and I are proud of our Cadets and their accomplishments,” said Senior Naval Science Instructor Capt. Arthur Stauff (retired). “We know they have learned a lot in this program, and will continue to do so for the rest of the year. Thank you, especially, to the parents for the support.”
